Warriors Assistant Coach to Depart at Season's End
11/12/2009
Retravision Warriors Assistant Coach Trevor Penney today informed the Western Australian Cricket Association that he will not seek re-appointment when his contract expires at the conclusion of the 2009-10 interstate season.

Penney will move to Queensland at the end of the summer to be closer to his wife Debbie and children Samantha and Kevin, all of whom are currently residing there.

41-year old Penney joined the WACA in 2007 to become Warriors Manager & Head Coach Tom Moody's right hand man. He had previously filled a similar role in Sri Lanka from 2005 to 2007, before undertaking a three-month stint as the nation's Head Coach.

In almost three seasons in Perth, Penney not only served as the Warriors' Assistant Coach, but also took charge of the WA Second XI and WA ‘A' teams. Under his tutelage, the WA Second XI was unbeaten in winning the 2007-08 Cricket Australia Cup competition, and won three of its four matches in 2008-09 but were narrowly pipped for the CA Cup title by the NSW Second XI.

Penney is also guiding the WA team in the inaugural Futures League competition in 2009-10 and will lead them in their quest for the Futures League Twenty20 title in Melbourne next week.

Penney says that leaving the Retravision Warriors was one of the toughest decisions he has had to make in his cricketing life.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the team and for the WACA the past few seasons, and loved living in Perth, but family has to come first,” Penney said.

“It has been a pleasure to work with all of the guys in the squad and to watch them develop as players and as individuals.

“I am certainly going to miss seeing them regularly, and I wish them all the very best for the future.”

Moody says Penney has been a tremendous asset to the WACA and to the Retravision Warriors.

“Trevor's vast knowledge, enthusiasm and passion for the game will be sorely missed,” Moody said.

“I am sure he will not be lost to coaching as he is a great acquisition for any organisation.”

WACA Chief Executive Officer Graeme Wood says Penney's impact was not only felt on the field, but off the field as well.

“Trevor had a positive impact on the players in the Retravision Warriors squad, but he also proved to be an immensely popular staff member here at the WACA,” Wood said.

“He has delivered exceptional service to the Warriors, and it has been pleasing to see players that he has worked with go on to have success at interstate and international level.

“It is extremely disappointing to lose a coach of Trevor's calibre, but we understand that family should always be a priority and we wish him all the best for his move to Queensland. He will always be welcome back here at the WACA.”

The WACA will commence planning the search for a new Assistant Coach in the coming weeks.
