WA has climbed to the top of the National Under 17 Championships points table after a convincing 80-run victory over host state South Australia at Glandore Oval today.
The visitors recovered from a slow start to post 229, before restricting the home side to 149 in reply to claim their fourth win in four matches at the carnival.
Skipper Ashton Turner held the WA top-order together with a quickfire 32, before Willetton wicket-keeper Cameron Bancroft (47) and Midland-Guildford batsman Stephen Coniglio (43) combined for an 83-run fifth wicket stand which put the visitors back on top.
Joondalup's Ryan O'Sullivan (34) and Claremont-Nedlands' Will Bosisto (26) made handy runs in the lower order to enable WA to post a defendable total. Will Dawson took 5-44 in 9.3 overs to be the pick of the SA attack.
It was slow going in the home side's reply and the run rate required for victory was constantly increasing thanks to some tight bowling from the visitors.
SA lost their last seven wickets for just 36 runs and they were eventually dismissed in the 46th over. Bayswater-Morley's Ryan Wetherall continued his great form with the ball, picking up 2-21 from his ten overs, while Turner backed up his efforts with the willow to snare 2-24 in ten and complete a fine all-round performance.
All teams will have a rest day tomorrow, before the two-day leg of the carnival begins on Thursday, with WA facing Victoria at Park 25.
