The WA girls have had their highest finish at a National Under 17 Championships after placing fourth at the 2009-10 carnival in Brisbane.
WA was beaten by 106 runs in the third place play-off by a powerful Victorian outfit. Vics openers Molly Strano and Gussie O'Sullivan piled on the runs after their skipper Laura Croft won the toss and chose to bat first. They finished on 0-225 from their 45 overs after a superb partnership – Strano bringing up her ton and finishing unbeaten on 101, while O'Sullivan was on 67 not out at the end of the Victorian innings.
WA was dismissed for 119 in the 31st over. Captain Chloe Piparo top-scored with 30, while Beth Wimbush (23) and Bhavi Devchand (10) were the other batters to make it to double figures.
WA's final result of two wins, three losses and two draws resulted in the girls finishing in the top four for the first time, a fantastic achievement by the team which was led by Coach Jim Walters and Manager Rachel Bench.
Meanwhile, the WA Under 17 boys play their final match at the National Championships in Adelaide against New South Wales tomorrow and Thursday.
Unbeaten at the championships to date, a win will secure WA's first National Under 17 title in over three decades, while a loss would open the door for second-placed ACT to leapfrog WA if they were to defeat Victoria outright in their last match at the carnival.
Play gets underway at 10.30am Adelaide time at Park 25 on both Wednesday and Thursday.
