Fletcher Park will host 'Super Sunday' in a fortnight as Perth, Rockingham-Mandurah, Scarborough and Wanneroo progressed to the semi-finals of the Statewide Twenty20 competition after yesterday's action.
The Demons will meet the Mariners and the Gulls square off with the Roos in the semi-finals on the morning of Sunday 21 February. The two winners will meet in the Grand Final at the same venue later in the day.
Perth was the first to advance to Super Sunday after the club clinched a third round victory over Mount Lawley on 24 January, and the Mariners, the Gulls and the Roos joined them there after winning through their second and third round matches across town yesterday.
The Mariners, who sat out round two with a bye due to the late withdrawal of Geraldton, accounted for Bunbury in the afternoon fixture to secure a semi finals berth. The underdogs from the country scored 7-143 from their 20 overs, with Retravision Warrior Ben Edmondson the best of the bowlers taking 2-18. In-form Mariners openers Craig George, who smashed a quick fire 28, and Brayden Sutton (21) got their team off to a good start in the run chase, but a stunning collapse almost sent them packing from the competition. Rising star Sam Whiteman got Rockingham-Mandurah home to a three-wicket win in the last over.
Bunbury had earlier upset Bayswater-Morley and had come close to their second fairytale result of the day, but the Mariners were not to be denied and booked their first ever appearance on finals day.
Powerhouse Scarborough was too good for the Eastern Goldfields in the morning fixture. Retravision Warrior Theo Doropoulos top scored with an undefeated knock of 36 to lead his team to 3-100 in reply to the opposition's meagre 97. They then backed up against Claremont-Nedlands in the afternoon fixture after the Tigers disposed of Esperance in round two. Warriors rookie Marcus Stoinis thrashed 53 to drive his side to 5-111 and a win over Claremont-Neldands, who were dismissed for 105.
Roos' Captain Joel Charles starred with the willow for his side with half centuries in both matches to push his team into semi finals contention. The big-hitter smashed 55 in the round two win over Forrestfield, while team mate Anthony Del Borrello chipped in with 44. The two were the backbone of their side's 2-141, which proved too good for the Swan Helena CA outfit, who had earlier hit 6-136.
In round three, Charles backed up that performance with 53 to lead his team to 153 against Willetton. Reigning Olly Cooley medallist Gary Dixon (37) also had a good knock, while Jake Fawcett (2-22) and Chris Quelch (2-24) led with the willow to restrict the Dragons to 7-127.
Perth secured the hosting rights to 'Super Sunday' after securing the highest net run rate of the four semi finalists.
