WACA SunSmart Womens Competition Preview
05/09/2008

The SunSmart WACA Womens Competition is gearing up for another huge season in 2008-09.

The competition is comprised of eight clubs - Subiaco Marist, South Perth, Rockingham-Mandurah, Melville, Midland-Guildford, Tuart Hill, Whitfords and Gosnells.

There is A and B Grade with Gosnells and Whitfords only entering a side in B Grade.

The A Grade is the elite competition in WA for women where players can press for State selection in the Western Fury and ultimately national selection for the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars Australian Womens team.

B Grade has a social atmosphere and is perfect for the beginner wanting to have a go at cricket.

WACA Female Cricket Officer and Western Fury wicket-keeper Jenny Wallace says an exciting summer lies ahead.

“With the relatively new Twenty20 and six-a-side format to stay along with the regular A and B Grade one-day competitions, there are great opportunities for both the novice cricketer and budding professionals to get involved with the game,” Wallace said.

“Getting young girls in to cricket is vital to ensure the future of women's cricket, and it's important that girls interested in cricket can choose to play socially or competitively.

“That's why we have the two different pathways to cater for all girls wanting to get a taste of our great game.”

Girls can choose to get involved for fun and compete in activities like beach cricket, six-a-side, Twenty20, and MILO in2CRICKET, which is the earliest form of cricket they can play.

The pathway for young female cricket talent also exists to help serious cricketers reach their goal of representing their State, and eventually their country.

From a young age, the WACA Holiday Cricket Clinics give competitive female cricketers a chance to further develop their skills in a fun environment.

The WACA Junior Competition, for Under 13s, Under 15s and Under 17s, give girls a chance to compete at a higher level and compliments high school cricket programs excellently.

The Rising Fury Under 15s squad also assists in talent identification and gives the girls involved a taste of cricket at an elite junior level.

From there, girls are ready to tackle the senior SunSmart Womens Competition and press for selection in the State Under 17s, Under 19s and the Western Fury.
