South Perth claimed their maiden win in the 2008-2009 SunSmart Women's A grade competition on the weekend against Rockingham-Mandurah. South Perth is a new addition to the league this season and has been desperate to notch their first win. Rockingham-Mandurah batted first in ideal conditions at Lark Hill and started positively, building a three figure total before long. They finished with 158 and set South Perth the task of chasing the respectable total to grasp their first ever win in the competition. South Perth speedster Rene Farrell bowled beautifully to claim 4 scalps and then proceeded to take the game away from Rockingham-Mandurah by compiling a sensational 86 not out for a memorable win. South Perth clash with Midland-Guildford at Ernest Johnson Oval this Sunday 19 October 2008, play commences at 11:45am.
Subiaco-Marist continued their excellent early form by claiming back to back wins to start the season. Tuart Hill batted first against the strong line-up and couldn't generate enough partnerships with Rachel Reynolds (58 not out) the only bat to seriously trouble the scorers. Avril Fahey (3-44) and Kate Burns (2-23) were instrumental with the ball as Subi-Marist looked to have the game in the bag. The run chase never looked in doubt as Angele Gray (48 not out) continued to remind the Western Fury selectors of her dominant form. Subiaco-Marist battle it out with Rockingham-Mandurah at Lark Hill this Sunday 19 October 2008, play commences at 11:45am.
Melville top order bat Donna Brown scored a brilliant century to help Melville post a match winning total of 242 in their round two clash at Lilac Hill last Sunday. Brown scored her century off the last ball of her team's innings and was well supported by Peta Merillees (52) and Renee Chappell (45) in posting the big total. Brown has made two big scores to commence the season and will be at the fore front of the State Selector's minds when they sit down to select the Fury XI next month. Best with the ball for Midland-Guildford was Southern Stars squad member Lauren Ebsary who claimed 1-22 of 8 overs. Ebsary backed up her solid performance with the ball by smashing 92 and taking her team within a gasp of a late win, but it was not enough. Melville rolled them for 225 to claim the points. Midland-Guildford struggled all day running between the wickets and suffered 4 run-outs, a telling stat in the wash up. Melville pace spearhead Holly Hyder (2-48) bowled with scintillating pace but lacked control bowling 21 wides. At one stage though, she ripped Fury selector Heather Taylor's middle stump out of the ground which brought a roar from her Melville team-mates. Melville go head to head with Tuart Hill at Tompkins Park this Sunday 19 October 2008, play commences at 11:45am.
