Round 5 SunSmart Women's Competition Wrap
04/11/2008

Round five of the SunSmart WACA First Grade Women's competition saw rivals Subiaco Marist take on Melville in a replay of last year's grand final. Playing at home, the Subiaco Marist ladies won the toss and elected to bat. Openers Angele Gray and Emma King put together an opening stand of 96 to set the platform for a big score. Gray carried her bat to record an unbeaten 135 and with good support from Rachel Bench (31) and Avril Fahey (26), the home team posted an impressive 269 for the loss of only 3 wickets from their 50 overs. Lauren Shave (1 for 36) and Diane Brown (2 for 56) toiled hard for the visitors with the ball. Chasing a big total the Melville ladies came out and played their shots from the first ball. An even bowling performance by the home team, backed up by some good fielding, saw wickets fall at regular intervals ensuring the target was never really threatened. For the visitors, opener Peta Merilees (42) and middle order bat Holly Hyder (55) were the best of the batters, while Rachel Bench (2 for 23) and Emma King (2 for 29) were the pick of the Subiaco Marist bowlers.

Subiaco Marist play away to Tuart Hill in round six on Sunday 9 November 2008, play commences at 12:15pm at Charles Veryard.

Midland-Guildford notched their first win of the season by beating Rockingham-Mandurah at Lilac Hill. Rockingham-Mandurah won the toss and elected to bat on a hard Lilac Hill wicket. Their innings started positively with Amanda Williams (23) and Louise Jones (28) putting on a 69 run opening stand before Middies bowler Heather Taylor (2-19) made the breakthrough to edge her side back into the contest. The wickets continued to tumble as Rockingham lost their next 4 wickets for 13 runs. Mel Holmes (4-18) and State Under 17 representative Sarah Fargomeni (4-27) did the damage with the ball as Midland restricted Rockingham to 147. Midland-Guildford skipper Jenny Wallace (73 n.o) proceeded to rip the contest away from Rockingham with a brilliant knock and was backed up by Nicole Jorre De St Jorre (14) as Midland romped home to win by 6 wickets in the 32nd over.

Tuart Hill thrashed South Perth at Charles Veryard to record a 149 run win. South Perth won the toss and sent Tuart Hill into bat which turned out to be a poor decision as Tuart Hill piled on the runs. Nicole Ayres (86) played superbly and was backed up by Connie Wong (28), Rachel Reynolds (28) and Sue Pearce (27) as Tuart Hill racked up 236 all out. State Under 17 representative Helen Lynch (3-20) and Kirsty Morrision (2-25) were the pick of the South Perth bowlers. The run chase never looked dangerous as Jenny Gunn (33) was the only player to make substantial runs. Nicole Ayres (3-30) capped an excellent all round performance by taking crucial wickets for her side. Connie Wong (2-12) also chipped in with the ball to help bowl South Perth out for 87.
