SunSmart Cricket Competition Round Six Wrap
13/11/2008

Subiaco Marist continued their unbeaten start to the season when they took the points in a nail biter against Tuart Hill at Charles Veryard. The home team won the toss and elected to bat first on what looked to be a good batting strip. Tight bowling from Subiaco Marist saw wickets fall at regular intervals, with Rachel Bench, Emma King and Kate Burns all claiming two a piece. Tuart Hill opener Sue Pearce compiled a well made 46 to steer the home team toward a competitive total with the 8th wicket partnership of an unbeaten 48 runs helping to push Tuart Hill to 7 for 155 at the innings break. 14 year old Lucy Curtin made her A grade debut for Subiaco Marist and claimed two catches starring alongside another promising talent, Hannah Mouldrich, in the field. In the absence of in form opener Angele Gray, Cherie Bambury stepped in to open the batting for Subi with Emma King. The innings was off to a shaky start when King went early and with the Tuart Hill bowlers keeping very tidy lines, runs were proving difficult to come by. All the top order batters got starts with Bambury (23) the best of the top five but it was young gun Hannah Mouldrich that stepped up to the plate to steady the ship in the middle order, finishing with the top score for the visitors of 26. Subiaco Marist kept up with the required run rate but wickets continued to fall and it was left to the last wicket partnership of Sarah Young and Mel Egan to secure victory, with the winning run coming off the fourth ball in the last over of the game. Subiaco Marist were thrilled with the win and dedicated it to club Captain Avril Fahey, who achieved the rare honour of 200 games for her club. Nicole Ayres (3 for 46) and Connie Wong (2 for 12) were the best of the Tuart Hill bowlers.

Melville claimed a big 129 run win over Midland-Guildford at Lilac Hill. The Middies won the toss and fielded hoping to extract life out of the pitch early, which had worked in previous fixtures on Lilac 1. But wayward bowling (48 wides) and a lack-luster fielding performance never challenged Melville as they made a massive 9-275. Peta Merrilees had a couple of lives in a good knock of 80. Donna Brown continued her steady form falling on 56, with both openers dismissed by Nicole Jorre de st Jorre, who had the best return for the Middies with 4-31. Holly Hyder (31) and Lauren Shaw (21) played tip & run, pressuring the Midland field and the tactic paid off. Caroline Brough made 16 not out for Melville before turning into the spin king taking 4-17 to ensure Midland’s chase never got close. Midland was all out for 146. Best for the Middies was G, Jorre de st Jorre who made 24 and looked in control before Holly Hyder chased one of her lofted shots and stuck out the hands at the last second for a sensational catch. Sundries were the highest scorer as Melville bowled a disappointing 43 wides and four no-balls. A poor bowling display from both sides, Melville’s batters took advantage better and in the field they held their chances.

Rockingham Mandurah completed an excellent win against South Perth at Ernest Johnson Oval. The visitors made a competitive 250, with Emily Rixon getting in the runs but she was unfortunately stumped on 97, just short of her century. South Perth was unable to chase down the total with Rene Farrell scoring 40 not out in the tough conditions but she couldn’t prevent the home side collapsing and Rocky claimed the points.

The next round’s fixtures take place on Sunday 23 November, 2008. Subiaco-Marist clash with Rockingham-Mandurah at Newman Park Upper, Tuart Hill do battle with Melville at Charles Veryard and Midland-Guildford go head to head with South Perth at Lilac Hill 3.
