Western Australia has opened its 2015-16 Commonwealth Bank Australian Country Cricket Championships campaign with a famous win over New South Wales led by Albany’s Patrick Butler.
WA managed to defend their first-day score of 233, to win by 14 runs, with NSW bowled out for 219 after they had been cruising at 0-111.
Leg-spinner Butler, 20, was the star of the show with figures of 5-58 from 23.2 overs in a memorable win for the Sandgropers at Mount Gambier’s Malseed Park.
Upper Great Southern’s Kendall Ballard also played a key role with 2-26 from eight overs, including the breakthrough wicket of opener Jordan Moran.
Earlier, Jono Whitney (73) and Ashley Sbizzirri (65) helped WA reached 233 from 96 overs.
The result gets WA, who were ACCC winners two years ago, off to a flying start, ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Queensland at Blue Lake Sports Park.
