Midland-Guildford have cruised to a nine-wicket win in the
Female A-Grade T20 Grand Final against South Perth at the WACA Ground on Sunday
The win was made even sweeter for Midland-Guildford, who
were beaten by Melville in last season’s final.
Bhavisha Devchand won the Player of the Match medal,
presented by West Australian women’s cricket pioneer Avril Fahey, after taking
3-17 with the ball coupled with a match-winning 49 not out.
Swans captain Chloe Piparo won the toss and sent the Sky
Blues into bat, a brave call against the undefeated Sky Blues.
However, wrist spinner Devchand claimed three wickets early
in South Perth’s innings, which had the Blues in trouble at 3-31 after eight
South Perth bounced back thanks to a brilliant 80-run
partnership between Nicky Shaw (39) and Heather Siegers (30) to help guide them
to a competitive total of 5-114.
With no Elyse Villani in the Swans line up,
Midland-Guildford’s chances of winning relied heavy on the shoulders of Perth
Scorchers batter Piparo.
The Swans got off to a shaky start with Taneale Peschel run out
Peschel’s wicket brought Devchand to the crease, and Midland-Guildford never looked back.
Piparo (59no) and Devchand (49no) combined for 93 runs
between them which included nine boundaries, guiding them to victory.-Jake Battrick
