Wanneroo batsman Matthew Spoors has been named in a 15-player Australia Under-19’s squad for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka Under-19s in April in Tasmania.

Spoors, 17, is WA’s sole representative in the squad which has one eye on the present and another looking ahead to next year’s ICC Under-19’s Cricket World Cup in New Zealand from 12 January to 4 February.

The teenager was part of WA’s triumphant side at the Under-19 Nationals late last year, scoring 153 runs and taking 11 wickets at an average 19.82 with best figures of 4-21.

He also competed for WA at the 2015-16 Under-17s, finishing the competition’s seventh top scorer with 327 runs including two centuries, along with eight wickets.

Spoors played 10 First Grade games for Wanneroo in Alcohol.Think Again Premier Cricket this season, scoring 277 runs.

The series begins with a one-off three-day match following by five one-day matches.

National Talent Manager Greg Chappell said: "Some of the top performers from this summer’s Under-19 National Championships have been rewarded with selection.

"This series is also important as we look ahead to next year’s ICC Under-19 World Cup. This is a young Under-19’s squad, with every player except wicketkeeper Lewin Maladay eligible for selection for the World Cup.

"We expect that this team will be extremely competitive against Sri Lanka, in both the three-day match and five one-day matches.”
