A wicket-keeper and top-order batsman, Bancroft was given a WACA rookie contract ahead of the 2012-13 season having broken through for three appearances with the Warriors in the one-day cup in 2011-12 after strong performances at under-age level. Bancroft was handed an opportunity at Sheffield Shield level in the 2013-14 season and took it with both hands, establishing himself as WA's opener. Bancroft scored 896 runs including three centuries in the 2014-15 Shield season, leading to a call-up for the Test squad to face Bangladesh only for the tour to be postponed. Bancroft backed it up with 726 runs in the 2015-16 Shield campaign and earned his Australia debut in a T20 International as a wicketkeeper-batsman.
