Wells, Spoors claim Olly Cooley Medal

Perth’s Jonothan Wells and Scarborough’s Matthew Spoors have etched their name into WA Premier Cricket history, after being declared as joint winners of the Olly Cooley Medal at an awards presentation at the WACA Ground last night.

The medal count recognises the best player in WA Premier Cricket's First Grade competition as voted by the umpires on a 3-2-1 basis following each regular season fixture.

University’s William Bosisto polled the most votes during the regular season with 21, but was ruled ineligible for the medal due to a Code of Conduct offence earlier in the summer. After finishing equal-second on 20 votes, Wells and Spoors were declared joint winners, becoming the seventh pair to share the prestigious award.

Spoors ended the First-Grade competition with 549 runs at 42.23 and 33 wickets at 15.88. His best performance of the season came against South Perth in Round 12, where he produced match figures of 9-107 including a season-best 5-26 in the first innings.

The dynamic allrounder, who has also represented Canada 15 times (5 ODIS, 10 T20IS) in International Cricket, also showcased his match-winning ability with the bat on multiple occasions throughout the campaign, producing five half-centuries with a highest score of 89.

Wells compiled another standout season for Perth, amassing 905 runs at 90.50 including a remarkable six centuries and two half-centuries. His summer included an incredible run of form from Rounds Four to Seven, striking four centuries in succession to firmly cement himself as one of the competitions best players.

The diminutive right-hander, who had an extensive first-class career with Tasmania and Western Australia and in the Big Bash League across multiple franchises, also became a reliable wicket-taking option for his side, taking 16 wickets at 17.44 with a best of 5-46.

Spoors and Wells were also included in the WA Premier Cricket Team of the Season, with Wells being named captain for the second consecutive season after guiding Perth to back-to-back First-Grade premierships.

Other notable inclusions in the team were former WA cricketer Bosisto, who produced an incredible 919 runs at 91.90 for University, two-test English wicketkeeper Bracey (814 runs at 74) and Perth wicketkeeper Joel Curtis (613 runs at 47.15), who made his Sheffield Shield debut for WA against Queensland last November.

The Allan Edwards Award, which recognises the state’s most promising up and coming cricketer who consistently observes the Spirit of Cricket, was awarded to current WA rookie quick Mahli Beardman.
