Devchand crowned Female Premier Cricket’s Best

Wanneroo’s Bhavisha Devchand has capped off a prolific Premier Cricket season by claiming the Karen Read Medal as the competition’s standout player.

Devchand polled 24 votes to finish six clear of Subiaco-Floreat’s Jacqueline Naidoo (18) and eight ahead of Midland-Guildford’s Morgan Pires (16). Rising stars Rebecca McGrath (Melville, 14 votes) and Ines McKeon (Midland-Guildford, 13 votes) rounded out the top five.

She becomes the eighth winner of the highest honour in Female Premier Cricket, joining the likes of current WA Women’s players Amy Edgar, Mathilda Carmichael, and Lisa Griffith, who took out the medal last season.

The former state cricketer, who plied her trade with Western Australia and Victoria in the Women’s National Cricket League, produced a consistent campaign for Wanneroo, finishing with 377 runs at 34.27 and 11 wickets at 13.55 during the A-Grade T20 competition and 287 runs at 41 in the 50-over format.

Across all formats, Devchand tallied five half-centuries, including classy knocks of 92 and 89 against perennial powerhouses Melville and eventual champions Midland-Guildford respectively.

Devchand was also named in the 2023-24 WA Premier Cricket Female Team of the season, and took out the Female T20 Batting Aggregate, T20 Champion Player and 50-over Batting Aggregate awards.

Sixteen-year-old McKeon, who made her Women’s National Cricket League debut against New South Wales in January, was named as the Clare Papasergio Award recipient for 2023-24, with the award recognising the most outstanding player in Female A Grade cricket who also represented WA in the 2023-24 Cricket Australia Under 19s National Championships.

Midland-Guildford were the major winners of the evening, taking home the Female Club Championship after claiming the A Grade One-Day, T20 and B Grade One-Day Premierships.
